Hi all,

Just picked up an LY6 engine and when you look around it sure seems like Mizell's 6.0 mustang
is a benchmark for what a lot of guys want to achieve. I just have a couple of questions for
Dave. a. how deep did you notch your pistons b. Is the alternator mount setup on that car a custom job
or is it available somewhere. I have been unable to find an alternator mount for LS engines that do
not rely on a tensioner pulley. I will be running the Meziere race pump as well.
I'm 38 been racing for 20 yrs. This combo will be used to race NHRA, IHRA national events so I hope to post back with some
good results next season!

thanks a lot

Hey Steve!
The forever engine is still going strong running high nines in the "57 Corvette.
The valve notch is for the intake only. Depth was .100 on the stock dished LQ4 pistons.
Clayed the piston for the machinist to locate the notch.
The alternator setup was built using some spare parts. I will post a picture later today.

Thanks,
Dave

This is a picture of the set up on my 346. I had to move the alternator forward because of the external oil pump drive.
To use on an Iron block shorten the upper spacer, trim the lower mounting boss on the alternator.
The adjuster bracket is from an early SBC, available at the local parts store, chrome spacers at Sears hardware.

Dave, Thanks for the pic, it looks like I will be able to do something like that.

The next question, with the oil pump attached to the crank, how do you prime
the engine before initial break-in? I've been scratching my head about this.

You can make a inexpensive pressurized tank from a cheapy garden sprayer, feed it into a oil port and pressure feed the entire system. I have seen guys that will pull the spark plugs and spin the engine until they get pressure.....that would make me nervous though.

The last 2 engines I built used an external oil pump, just remove the belt and spin.
The stock LS setup can be pressurized as R.Olds has said thru the galley plug on the block behind the alternator.
If the engine was assembled with good lube you can spin it with no plugs, they do pick up pressure real quick.
