I'm looking to build a rear for my falcon street car,  Has anyone built an 8" rear for the street?  355 posi,  it is a 4 speed car with around 375 hp at the rear wheels. I'm hoping it will be cheaper to build and lighter than a 9"

Thanks Joe

I suggest a 9" or an 8.8" from a Fox Mustang or a Ranger.

Yep I agree with Joe,that 8" is not going to take the hit when you dump the clutch, check for the early bronco 9" they are narrow enough as onother option..

I had an 8" and it lived under 150 shot, 460 rwhp 393, 10.76 @ 130 mph, 1.70 sixty, 3150 lbs.

Broke on way home from Richmond dragstrip.

I was a dumb ass and doing "bunny hops".

Hop - Hop - bang, rattle, bang.

That was a lot of 9" money that I ended up having to spend.  The 8" would've lived longer if I wasn't a DUMB ASS.

8" detroit locker (what I had) or powertrax (father in law has in his).

After breaking to different axles on the launch at the track we installed a 8.8 from a fox into our 68 Falcon. The 8in diff is strong enough to handle some abuse but the axles weren't even close. The axles in the Mustang 8in are beefier but they were to short for my 68 housing. The fox 8.8 was within a 1/4" to our 68 Falcon 8in.

Great point about the axles.  I never really left hard enough or was heavy enough to tweak them much.

My flat tappet 393 was 375 rwhp when it ran the 11.60's @ 117.

Should live long enough for you to start collecting 9" stuff.

Thanks for the reply's, There's a guy around me that claims he builds 8" rears for up to 500 HP. I personally don't know anyone running an 8"  I have heard the axles are the weakest link.
